Crabbie 8 Year old single malt whisky is a modern day interpretations of a beloved classic John Crabbie & Co blend.

Bottled at 46% and un-chilfiltered, this is a beautiful highland whisky – full fruity floral notes with a deliciously smooth and well-balanced finish

Tasting Notes:

Nose: Sweet and delicate floral notes with subtle hints of ripe apricots.

Palate: Delightfully balanced with honey, malty notes at first followed by warming layers of vanilla and ripened summer fruits.

Finish: Long and light finish with a malty finish.

Awards: Double Gold San Francisco Spirits Awards 2019

Our Review

Review 115 31st March 2021

This will be the last reivew with this format, moving forward the reviews will have less personal opinion and input, they will focus on the facts of the whisky, we will no longer have our own tasting notes, but instead have agree, maybe or disagree with the official notes. We will still value score the whisky, however there will be adjustments to the scoring system which will see non age statement whiskies in all categories have a lower overall score, there will be more distribution in the scoring system.

Todays whisky is from a sample kindly provided by Alan McLoughlin, please go visit Alans Twitter @BronzeAssasin and give him a follow.

John Crabbie 8 Year Old Single Malt Whisky, this is a re-imagination of the original whisky which was a blend, discontinued in the 1970s, this version, as named is a Single Malt Whisky produced on behalf of Halewood - Crabbies Owning company, by a highland distillery, it is speculated this could be a Glenfarclas.

This 8 year old is bottled at 46% ABV, is neither chill filtered or coloured, which for a well priced single malt is great to see. It is widely available, some prices used for the average price are

The Whisky Exchange £29.95
Master of Malt £29.95
Amazon £29.95
The Whisky World £29.90

Giving an average price of £29.93, however, at the time of recording Sadlers Brewery Webshop have it on offer for £24, we believe Sadlers to be part of the Halewood Group.

The cask maturation or finish is not mentioned on the official website, but we suspect this could be a combination of ex-bourbon and sherry maturation.

On the nose, immeadiately this comes across with sherry but there is also some bourbon influenced notes. The alcohol is present, but it doesn't nip and does hide its youthfulness quite well although it can be detected.

On the palate, the alcohol is present and a little nippy and youthful. Again this is sherry influenced. But there is plenty of vanilla and caramel. There is quite a dominant Orange Juice note, which with the oily almost waxy texture makes it a velvety pleasant dram. There is a familiarily to this dram, which we suspect could be a glenfarclas - It does taste similar to a 105 and their 8 year old expressions.

This represents a great value and tasty everyday sipper, with a value score of 94.26 out of 100, we would buy a bottle.
