Review 124 27th April 2021

This is the penultimate review in our Speyside mini series.

Today we look at an independent bottling of a Linkwood (aren't they all).
The particular bottle we are looking at is out of stock with all the larger whisky retailers, however, you may be lucky enough to grab a bottle by checking with smaller retailers, a google search found it instock here

https://www.whisky-on-line.com/en/whisky/single-malts/linkwood-1997-hunter-laing

The bottle in question is a Linkwood 1997 Vintage from Hunter Laing The Old Malt Cask. It is an 18 year old single malt whisky, bottled in July 2015 at 50% ABV from a single cask. It is natural colour and un-chill filtered. There were 257 bottles released.

Linkwood are a Diageo owned distillery, the majority of the production goes into blends but a decent proportion also appears with independent bottlers such as this one.
As this is a sold out limited release we don't give a value score or an overall score.

On the nose, it has such a beautiful nose. It is aromatic and fragrant but quite delicate with it. There are fruits, vanilla and cream. There is some alcohol nip that starts to singe the nasal hairs if you nose it for too long.

On the palate, it is oily with a creamy butter feel. There is a vanilla honey that leads to a sweet almost sugar puff breakfast cereal flavour. This is a really tasty whisky.

With water on the nose, a note similar to a nail varnish appears, on this palate this appears as pear drops. A ginger pickle appears on the palate with some green herbal notes. On the palate is it really quite delicious and works with and without water.

This is easily an everyday sipper even at this strength. Quite magnificent.
