  • Review 118 4th April 2021

Continuing with Speyside Month for April, we are reviewing Benromach 10 Year Old.
We bough a bottle livery was changed and the old label style were on clearance, the liquid inside remains the same.

The change of the label caused some division amongst the whisky community, some people loved the new design while others disliked it. We remain neutral and liked both designs, but after all, its whether the whisky of good value and tastes good that really matters.

Benromach is operated by Gordon and Macphail, better known as Independent Bottlers and owned by Speymalt Whisky Distributors Limited.

It is natural colour and bottle at 43% ABV. In terms of chill filtration, they don't state anything on the bottle, carton or website. There is speculation that it is lightly filtered.
With regard to price, at the time of publishing, it retailed for

£33.95 Master of Malt (affiliate link)
    £34.95 The Whisky Exchange

Giving an average price of £34.45. It achieves a value score of 88.63 out of 100.

It is 80% matured in first fill ex-bourbon and 20% matured in 1st fill ex-sherry, before being vatted together for a final year of maturation in sherry casks. This whisky has been lightly peated / smoked.

On the nose, you get a light iodine phenolic, not at intense as a Islay. It is fruity, not as they state a rich sherry, more a light sherry fruit. There is a touch of vanilla and malt with a lovely smoke. The alcohol doesn't appear to be present on the nose.

On the palate, this is a marmite dram, not in flavour however. When you taste it, we love and hate it in equal measure. On one side you have fruit, maybe apple and raisin, then there is some sweet honey and vanilla. The fruit element reminds us of a Glenfiddich, but it's a little watery. Then on the otherside, you have an oily, smokey and sweet peat note, with some earthy note, almost BBQ. The two sides don't appear to be blended together, they appear individual but joined together with a smokey ribbon. The alcohol is present and does give a bit of a nip, equal to a 43% strength.

There have been times we have poured a dram and not feeling the love, but other times it hits the spot and is magnificent.

Would we buy another bottle? No, simpy because it doesn't do enough for us, we like to pick a bottle up and want to pour it, but we keep finding that we push it to the side and look to grab something else. We would pour this one to share as it is a good conversation whisky, you could convince someone this is a blended malt, but not an islay as the peat and smoke isn't quite the Islay style.  It is lacking something, either a more intense peat or more flavoursome fruit. We do however want to try more from Benromach, because this is a tasty introduction to the brand, even if that is only 50% of the time.

For an overall score we rate it 83 out of 100... no 87 out of 100... somewhere in between! 85 out of 100.
