Bruichladdich The Organic 2011

A forthright expression from Bruichladdich's Barley Provenance Series, this 2011 vintage showcases the clarity of flavour from organically grown barley when distilled slowly in our tall narrow necked stills. Rich and creamy, with a luxurious mouthfeel.

Mid Coul farm, located close to Inverness in the north of Scotland, provided our first crop of Organic barley back in 2003. A progressive 2,755 acre estate, Mid Coul has a closed-loop fertility system that generates electricity using an anaerobic digestor while allowing almost all waste material to be recycled as fertiliser.

With no artificial input, barley is fertilised from the ground up and is therefore the purest expression of its terroir – the soil, the climate and geographical location of where it is grown.

Working in harmony with nature, this sustainable spirit is the future of whisky and an important expression in our Barley Provenance series.

The delicate floral spirit is matured in classic American oak, bringing a wonderful combination of creamy vanilla and fudge with honeyed citrus notes, ripe fruit and delicate spices.

Character

2011 Organic is another stunning example of the wonderful clarity of flavour we see from organically grown barley when distilled slowly in our tall narrow necked stills.

Colour

Light Amber

Nose

Notes of Crème brulee, cataloupe melon, stoned fruit and lemon zest open on the nose. Oak and sweet fruit follow, expanding into mellow toasted oak, caramel, orange blossom, honey and malted barley sugars. Delicate floral notes of honeysuckle, rose and geranium comes through, paired with cinder toffee and coconut dipped in chocolate.

Palate

Barley sugar sweetness is carried by a viscous texture that opens up a honeyed citrus tang. A medley of toasted oak, barley flour, vanilla fudge, ripe pear and melon come in waves - showcasing the complexity and balance of this expression. A fresh ocean breeze and the salty tang of marine air combines with vanilla, toffee and the ceder notes of the oak, all wrapped in the soft fruits of distillation.

Finish

Golden syrup sweetness is balanced with hints of wood spices and warm sand, providing a smooth yet complex finish. Subtle notes of nutmeg, coconut, pepper and citrus zest follow, gently settling into tropical fruit flavours of mango, pineapple and peach.
