Glen Moray Elgin Classic Sherry Cask Single Malt Whisky

Our sherry cask finish richly illustrates our expertise in finishing, a skill we've been honing for many years. We begin by maturing our spirit in American oak casks for our traditional Speyside style then we finish in Oloroso sherry casks, sourced from Jerez in Spain to add notes of dried fruity, nuts and spice. A whisky to be savoured both by long-time single malt fans and new drinkers alike.

  • Review 117 3rd April 2021

Continuing with April being Speyside month, our next review is Glen Moray Elgin Classic Sherry Cask. This will be the first Glen Moray whisky we have reviewed.
The whisky gets its name from the town of Elgin where the it started life as the West Brewery, later converted to a distillery.

The Elgin classic range that this whisky is from, are all non age statement core range products, each with a different cask finish, in this case matured in ex-borbon casks before a period of ex-sherry finishing. Bottled at 40% ABV, it is chill filtered and colour adjusted.

    Widely available is retails for

    £26.95 from Master of Malt
    £26.95 from The Whisky Exchange
    £22 from Sainsbury
£22 from Amazon, however, this is currently on offer for £18.

Giving an average price of £24.48 (Excluding the amazon current offer price)
It achieves a value score of 80.88 out of 100.

On the nose, you get an imediate sweet and sherry influence note. The sherry finishing is a little softer than you may expect, more juicy summer fruits of Apple, Pear and berries rather than the traditional dark and rich fruit, this suggests the bourbon influence and distillery style showing through and not being overwhelmed.
There is vanilla, toffee and a salty minerality.

On the palate, it is has vanilla but suprisingly, more dark fruit than the summer fruit from the nose. Apple and pear but also plum and raisin. There is a touch of spice and oak on the finish, but the alcohol while not too present on the nose shows up with a nip on the palate.
The texture is just oily enough to give a decent mouthfeel, but it sits just on the border between been too watery. It is a pleasant feel and taste.

It is a great every day sipper, very competent and maybe a good gateway whisky into a sherry style, it does what you expect for the price.

We recommend this whisky for being cheap and cheerful without being too complex, which makes it a good easy drinking dram.

For an overall score, this achieves 84 out of 100.
