Glenfarclas 12 Year Old Cask Strength by Drinks by the Dram

Drinks by the Dram Glenfarclas 12 Year Old Cask Strength Listing

A special bottling of Glenfarclas single malt Scotch whisky, aged for 12 years before being bottled at cask strength from those Drinks by the Dram folks. Yummy Speyside single malt at a punchy strength - we love it.

Tasting Note by The Chaps at Master of Malt

Nose: Rum-soaked raisins and good old sherry, with hints of buttered crumpet and malt loaf underneath.

Palate: Brioche, fried banana, more raisins and chocolate. A hint of rancio, perhaps...

Finish: Nutella, white pepper, clove and damson jam.

This is the second part of our review, the first can be found by clicking this link Glenfarclas 12 Year Single Malt Whisky.

Before starting the review, we poured a measure of the cask strength and added an exact amount of water to dilute the spirit down to 43% ABV to match that of the standard 12 year old single malt.

The 12 year old cask strength is an exclusive bottling provided by Drinks by the Dram, still a distillery bottling, it retails on Master of Malt for currently £57.95, although the price has been reduced for an offer on occasion. Like the regular 12 year old it is natural colour and has been barrier (Agressive) filtered, it gets a value score of 93.18 out of 100 helped along by the higher ABV of 58.7%

On the nose it is musty, sherry heavy with strong spices, sweet dark fruits from a christmas cake and some vanilla and honey. It is exactly as you would expect from a cask strength Glenfarclas and very similar to the 105 from the the distillery.

On the palate it presents syrup texture, with again, a musty dark fruit intense sherry explosion, this is a sherry bomb, although not as intense as some other sherry bombs that we have reviewed, such as the Signatory editions of Edradour or Deanston. The alcohol is there and if you think about it makes its presence known, however, for a more experienced palate, it is that musty sherry that carries the senses on the journey. Its very tasty, with a balance of sweet and those christmas cake spices which continue to the bitter and dark chocolate finish.

With added water, the palate is more musty with dark fruit and spice notes than the regular 12 year old, however, given the price difference, why dilute the cask strength if you have the distillery edition to hand? Of course its preference and there may be an ABV inbetween the two that suits better. How does it compare to the 105? we haven't review it yet, however, the 105 does represent better value as its cheaper and has a slightly higher ABV, there is also not much from memory to differentiate between the two. For any sherry bomb fan, we recommend the cask strength version as a christmas gift, but there wouldnt be a need to get both this version and the regular 12, unless, like us, Glenfarclas is your preferred distillery.

For an overall score we rate the cask strength edition the same 89 out of 100 as the regular version.
