With this review we looked at two versions of the Glenfarclas 12 Year Old Single Malt Whisky, the standard version bottled at 43% and the Drinks By the Dram edition bottled at Cask Strength at 58.7% ABV, this write up looks at the former, for the Cask Strength click the link.

As mentioned, the 12 year old is bottled at 43% ABV, this is a step up from both the 8 Year Old and 10 Year Olds we have reviewed previously. It is like the whole Glenfarclas range, natural colour, a fact that is stated on the back label of the bottle.
Regarding filtration, Glenfarclas make no statement on their bottle, tube or website about this status, however, it is commonly believed they do not chill filter, but do use a barrier filter which for whisky purists can do as much as chill filtration for stripping flavour, the value score reflects a chill filtration process in its award.

It retails for an average of £39.95, it can be find widely available online and in physical retail stores of whisky specialists, however, the price does vary quite a bit, we recommend shopping around as almost 25% of the price can be saved. For it value score it achieves 91.17 out of 100, let down by the filtration process.

On the nose the Glenfarclas is a delight, the sweet rich dark fruit notes of sherry are obvious, however, not as intense as other sherried malts, which we appreciate as it allows some of the distillery style to shine, its not all dominated by sherry. With the usual sherried fruit of sultanas and cherry, there are spices popping on the nose, cinnamon, ginger and clove, but there is also a hint of bourbon with caramel and vanilla showing up and some wood.

On the palate, the alcohol makes its presence known with a spicy nip, its clearly fruity with juicy sultana and raisins, cherry and christmas cake dark fruits. There is some honey, vanilla with some milk chocolate. The finish is a little bitter with ginger and cinnamon showing up. The palate provides a little more sherry than the nose suggests, but it still isn't overly sherried, its not a sherry bomb by a long way.

We adore this expression from Glenfarclas, yes it could do with being 46% and have a less agressive filtration, but for what it offers its fantastic and consistent with the Glenfarclas style of whisky. This is our second bottle and we will be buying another when this one is finished. For an overall score we rate it 89 out of 100. This is a bottle that you can't go wrong with if you are considering a whisky purchase as a Christmas gift.
