The Glenfarclas 8 year old comes in a green coloured tube, it may seem unfamiliar to those starting on their whisky journey, thats because, the 8 year old isn't intended for the UK market, as such, it can usually only be found in Europe.

I picked it up for around £30 online. In Europe it is priced closer to £25. The UK price is about £2.95 cheaper than the 10 year old Glenfarclas.

It is bottled at 40% ABV, it has a statement about being natural colour, however, like all Glenfarclas bottlings, it has no chill filtration status, but it isn't chill filtered, we still need to dock points for its overall score, which recieves 85.25/100.

It is a sherry matured single malt like the rest of the core range, meaning you should be able to see a progression of cask and sherry influence on their malts as they age.

On the nose, the sherry isn't as noticable, the dominant nose is fresh, with honey and vanilla. It is quite earthy, floral and a little youthful, but this adds to its freshness. The fruit is a little citrus, apple and pear. Its a pleasant nose.

On the palate, it starts sweet and bitter. There is apple, pear and vanilla. The mid palate shows some Milk Chocolate, caramel and vanilla, then there is some spice as it moves to a slightly bitter oaky finish.

There is very little mouthfeel, its not oily like some of the other glenfarclas and the body is quite watery. But dont let this distract you, this is still a tasty malt. While it is a beginner whisky, I wouldn't class it as a gateway malt, there are better malts introducing you to scotch, however, this would be a progress malt to see how sherry influences a whisky when compared to un-sherried malt of a similar age and style.
