Glenkinchie Distillers Edition Single Malt Whisky

Founded in 1837 by farmers George and John Rate, twenty miles from the heart of Edinburgh, Glenkinchie was completely rebuild in the 1890s to become a large model distillery. And it has worked almost continuously ever since, even through two world wars. It occupies a sylvan setting with its own bowling green, yet possesses two of the largest stills in Scotland. The buildings converted to steam heated stills in 1981, with the wash still alone holding some 32,000 litres. One of the last working Lowland distilleries for many years, Glenkinchie is known as “The Edinburgh Malt” for its proximity to Scotland’s capital city.

The DISTILLERS EDITION is a collection of master-craftsmanship. Each cask in the series is individually selected and perfectly matched to the character of each of the single malts refined here. The two-parted maturation process gives more depth and complexity, which is the idea behind the limited DISTILLERS EDITION: preserving the perfection of the single malts that have already been awarded for their outstanding flavours. The selected taste nuances are more strongly accentuated in a way that is not found in the regular bottlings, but with fully maintaining the original character of these fine single malts.

  • SCOTLAND'S FINEST - Since 1997, the Distillers Editions have been an annual release of limited quantities, each very much true to its origins yet possessing a rich depth, complexity and nuance of flavour not found in the regular release. This excellent Glenkinchie whisky has been firstly matured in Refill American and European Oak casks. With the second maturation finished in Amontillado-seasoned re- charred American Oak with heavily recharred new AO ends.

  • PURE FLAVOUR - Double matured in elegant Amontillado Seasoned American Oak Casks to complement the whisky’s sophisticated balance between sweet and dry, the Distillers Edition reveals a fascinating, crisp and fuller-bodied character of Glenkinchie. Yet it seems to take its light, grassy character from the rolling green fields that surround the distillery.

APPEARANCE

Harvest gold. Fine beading. Long thin legs.

BODY

Light to medium.

NOSE

Crisp, yet well-formed, and complex. Nicely balanced between the drier notes from the wine and sweeter, nutty notes of barley and cask wood.

PALATE

Lightly oily, and sweetly malty in taste to start, then soon spicy, with rich dried fruit hints of raisin and date. Creamy-smooth, the lightly grapey sweetness is crisply balanced by warming wood-spice as it dries from mid-palate on.

FINISH

Really long, attractively drying and oaky, while lightly white pepper-spicy. Appealing aftertaste.
