Taisteal derives its name from the Gaelic word for “journey” and is born of a rich tradition of Scotch whisky. Taisteal is a conduit between the past and the future of spirits and those that love them. We partner with our distillers to take 500 years of Scottish heritage into the 21st century, forging a gateway to the rich history of Scotch whisky in a modern age.

Our Review

Review 113 - 23rd March 2021

Today we review a full bottle of a Blended Scotch Whisky from an independent based out of Hong Kong 'Milestone Beverages HK Ltd'. They have three whiskies under their brand of 'Taisteal' a Single Grain, a Single Malt and the Blended Scotch Whisky we are looking at today, more information about Milestone can be found by following the link on the left panel from this review.

We contacted Milestone with several questions, to gather further information about the whisky and their reply was within several hours, which by our experience of the industry average is immediate, a massive thanks for the reply.

The Tailsteal Blended Scotch is a blend of Malt and Grain blended by Angus Dundee, you will know them more for their superb Glencadam Single Malts and Tomintoul Single Malts. While there will be some whisky from Angus Dundee, there may also be whiskies from other distillers to achieve the desired profile.

Bottled at 40% ABV, it is chill filtered and colour adjusted for batch consistency. It can currently be found on Amazon for £22.50 and Master of Malt for £21.95, giving an average price of £22.23, which is slightly higher than the standard budget offering. However we paid a little over £15 from Amazon when it was on offer, this put this blend into a very competitive price point which makes it a very interesting proposition. For a value score it achieves 84.22 out of 100.

The blend is a vatting of whiskies matured in a combination of ex-bourbon, refill hoghead and sherry butts.

On the nose, it gives that sherry influence immeadiately, it is fruity but not overpowered with sherry. It has an inviting chocolate and fudge note with some spice at the end. The alcohol is just enough to be recognised but is not hot and doesn't come across too youthful, the grain aspect doesn't seem to present itself.

On the palate, it is sweet with a slight grain note. There are rich fruits from a christmas cake, but once again the sherry isn't to dominant. There is vanilla and caramel. On the finish there is apple turnover, a cinnamon spiced apple pastry with oak. There is a little youthfulness, it has a decent level of oily mouthcoating texture which does reduce to a more watery finish.

At £15 this is a bargain we can recommend. This is as good as the Whyte and Mackay Blended Scotch we reviewed previously, which has an average of around £18, we would say that this Taisteal is worth that. If a sherried influenced blend is your preferred style then you could argue £22 is worth it. For our mind this is an everyday sipper and is enjoyable.

For an overall score, we give it the same as the Whyte and Mackay 85 out of 100.
