Glen Scotia 48 Year Old Single Malt Whisky

Originally laid down in December 1974, this remarkable liquid has passed through the hands and care of multiple generations of distillery teams. It is incredible to think that it was specially selected to be kept back time and time again by various hands, and allowed to continue its journey long after its carers stood down from the helm of the distillery. More than just a remarkable age, it is a window through time into a past era of Glen Scotia.

CASK SELECTED: 1974 17/582-1

Today, Glen Scotia’s Master Blender has picked up the mantle for these cherished casks of exceptional character, ensuring the final result is a true representation of Glen Scotia’s past. To mark this rare and special release, he looked back to Campbeltown’s international trade connections and relationships with Spanish bodegas that its fortuitous coastal location and harbour afforded. Piecing together history and articles to form a view of what fortified wines and spirits were available and used, a careful selection of sherry finishing has been chosen to produce a truly classical style of Campbeltown Single Malt.

AN EXCEPTIONAL EDITION TO ANY COLLECTION

The Glen Scotia 48-year-old is presented in a handmade oak display case, inspired by the artistic Spanish ‘Azulejo’ tile designs that were once found in the bodegas and bars of Seville, then wider Spain and Portugal over the 18th and 19th century. A further oak tile resting beneath the bottle holds a plaque with the individual bottle number, tasting notes, and story of this incredible single malt whisky. In partnership with Glencairn, each individually numbered bottle has been tastefully etched and infilled, with gold metal decoration to the body and shoulder. A heavy metal stopper completes its exceptional presentation.

A REMARKABLE JOURNEY...

Distilled 28/12/1974, the Glen Scotia 48-year-old has been matured in a traditional combination of refill and then first-fill bourbon barrels. After forty-three years gently resting and developing its layers of character, this exceptional single malt was recasked into a first-fill oloroso hogshead for a further five years, where it was left to take on the delicately perfumed floral and orange citrus notes that transport us from Campbeltown to Spain’s cathedral-like sherry bodegas.

Finally, to add a further dimension to this already refined and delicately complex dram, the whisky was given a final six month finish in a second-fill ex-Pedro Ximénez Hogshead, adding further subtle layers of treacle sweetness and orange marmalade spice while still preserving the subtle salty and maritime distillery character underneath. The result is single malt of exceptional character, truly unlike anything released to date - a Spanish symphony of different flavours interwoven with Campbeltown’s signature coastal style

Whisky Resource Note

The value score assigned to this whisky is 101 DIAMOND, it is an indication that a value score cannot be assigned as a whisky with this age statement and price is very rare and unavailable to all but the deepest whisky pockets / collectors.

To achieve Diamond status the whisky must achieve all four presentation attributes:

Non Chill Filtered, Natural Colour, Cask Strength and Single Cask*

Value Score Diamond

Note a value score of 0 is assigned to whisky for which we do not have a historical or current price.
For further information about Value Scores follow the link to read about how they are calculated.(new window)

* Single Cask for the purposes of a value score simply means the whisky came from a single cask at the point of bottling and is not a blend of more than 1 (one) cask at bottling, however the whisky may have been re-casked during its maturation.
