Jura 10 Year Old Single Malt Whisky

A SMOOTH ALL-ROUNDER FOR THE MODERN DRINKER; GENTLE SPICE AND SHERRY SWEETNESS

A whisky only Jura could make, born of our island and still produced today in a bottle originally shaped to withstand the roughest of journeys from our home. Crafted in exceptionally tall stills and matured for 10 years in America White Oak ex bourbon barrels.

The finishing touch is a finish in the finest aged Oloroso Sherry casks from Jerez, Spain. A sweet, smooth whisky with flavours of rich dark chocolate and vanilla cream throughout.

  • Jura 10 is the first Age Statement whisky in their core range.
Owned by Whyte and Mackay (Emperador)

Bottled at 40% ABV, Chill Filtered with E150 colour added. It has an average retail price of £34.45, which gains our value score of 83.76/100, this score is pretty much what most standard bottlings achieve. It is aged in a combination of first fill bourbon casks and Jerez Oloroso sherry casks.

Its malty, honey sweet on the nose with some spice and peat smoke. Some fruit, maybe pear or apple. The dominating nose is the sweetness follwed by the peat and spice. It does disguise its age well, not much noticable youthfullness on the nose. overall its pleasant nose.

On the palate, again its starts sweet and fruity with orchard fruits from the nosing, then comes salty peat smoke with the honey sweetness binding it. There is a disctinct maritime note, not as aggressive as a Talisker or Cambeltown, but it is in the similar style.

While the Jura is similar to Glen Scotia Double Cask in that they are both two cask matured, this bottle is gives more fruit and less of the sharp peat and brine notes that the Glen Scotia offers, they don't taste the same. If this whisky was presented non-chill filtered and at 46% abv, the flavour would be bolder and have more depth, as it is however, it does a decent job as softer introduction to something with peat smoke and brine influence, a good gateway dram to moving into smokier whisky.

For an overall we score it 84/100. It wouldn't regain a place in our collection unless it was found on offer, maybe the 350ml bottle would be the choice once again, but this doesn't mean its not a worthwhile whisky to have, it has its merits.
